Hoea tō Waka
Resources

Hoea tō Waka has resources to help you remember concepts you learned in the training. On this page you will find videos to help workshop participants to learn the waiata and the song in English.

You can also purchase the short story 'My Brother Hemi' to share with whānau. The story is appropriate for anyone over eight and is also a wonderful resource for teachers to share with their classes to enhance students' understanding and compassion for themselves and others.

Short Story- 'My Brother Hemi'

'I walk with Hemi and Mrs Jackson to the school office. Hemi is still crying really loud. But I’m not embarrassed. I’m raging.'

The concepts in ‘My Brother Hemi’ are from “Hoea tō Waka: Strength in Aotaeroa” © (2019, Anna Brown).  This unique short story is a guide to getting through difficult times. Hoea tō Waka is designed around a simple image to explain the main points of the research. The ideas can be applied to every thought, feeling and action of ourselves and others. The aim is to make these essential wellbeing concepts accessible and relevant in our unique cultural environment.

‘My Brother Hemi’ is based around a child who has an autistic sibling. The concepts can be used to encourage compassion and understanding for ourselves and anyone we may meet, in any circumstance.

Everyone all over the world has lots of thoughts they didn’t choose....... People with brown eyes, blue eyes or green.”

I look to the sky and feel Nan with me. I touch the feathers of the korowai she gave me. Who do I want to be? What currents might help me?

'Maia Makes Waves'

“Why didn’t she just leave him?”

“Why didn’t she tell us how bad it was?”

To her friends and family, Maia seems successful and settled. Yet she is fighting a battle that she doesn’t dare to share with anyone close to her.  The harder Maia tries to get help the worse the danger becomes.

Anna shows how the ‘Hoea tō Waka’ wellbeing model applies to Maia’s experience.

Maia Makes Waves explores our options when no one understands, when our words are twisted by people whose job it is to help us. The strategies in this book have been proven to be effective in real life situations, just like Maia’s.  Despite her circumstances, Maia finds strength and direction…and the support her family needs.
