Hoea tō Waka is an evidence-based resilience model designed especially for Aotearoa.
About the founder and programme developer
Anna Brown
BA (Psych), Dip Counselling, MNZAC
Anna spent eight years as a youth worker, first with young people convicted of sexual offences, then with Youth Guarantee students. Anna has spent ten years counselling people aged thirteen and up, both in private practice and secondary schools. Anna is the mother of five beautiful children. They are of Scottish, Irish, English and Ngāi Tahu (Ngai Tūāhuriri) decent. Hoea tō Waka came about as a way to honour the research done by others and translate it into something the community can use to find strength and come together.
Why learn Hoea tō Waka: Strength in Aotearoa?
Hoea tō Waka is evidence based. Hoea tō Waka is based on decades of research placed in our unique cultural context.
Designed especially for Aotearoa. Hoea tō Waka can include concepts of whakapapa, tīpuna and the individual's spiritual beliefs. Rather than being a technique, this model places us next to the client. Hoea tō Waka fits comfortably in a kaupapa Māori and mainstream environment. People have described the model as empowering and uplifting.
A huge range of applications. Hoea tō Waka can help with self-care, avoiding burnout, confidence, loosening the grip of difficult thoughts and emotions, goal setting, depression, parenting, understanding others, motivation, anger, self reflection and personal growth, helping others excel, professional supervision, and anxiety.
Easy to apply and remember. Have you ever left a workshop feeling inspired, but never applied what you learned? You can apply Hoea tō Waka to your every thought, emotion and behaviour, straight away. Workshop numbers are kept low so they are interactive and focused on your needs. Take Hoea tō Waka into your everyday life with resources including a short story, song and waiata-a-ringa.
